Answer: When a seed gets enough air, water, and warmth, it starts growing. This process is called germination. The baby root that comes out first and grows downwards is called radicle, and the baby shoot that grows upwards is called plumule.
Q2. A farmer kept his grains in open sacks. After some time, he noticed that pests like rats and insects had spoiled most of the grains. What mistake did the farmer make? Where should he have stored the grains safely?
Answer: The farmer made a mistake by keeping the grains in open sacks. Grains should be stored safely in granaries, gunny bags, or airtight sealed containers called silos to protect them from pests and moisture.
Q3. Ananya found some seeds sticking to her clothes after she came back from a walk in the park. She was surprised to see them. How do you think these seeds got stuck to her clothes? Name one such seed.
Answer: Some seeds have hooks or spines that stick to the fur of animals or clothes of people. These seeds are carried to new places in this way. For example, seeds of cocklebur or burdock.
Q4:- Farmers in Punjab grow wheat, while in Kerala, farmers grow coconuts. Why are different crops grown in different states of India? Give two examples.
Answer: Different crops need different types of climate, soil, and seasons to grow.Wheat grows well in loamy soil of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.Coconut trees grow well in coastal areas of Kerala and Goa.
Q5. A farmer wanted his crops to grow very fast. So, he used a large amount of chemical fertilizers in his field. After some time, the crops grew well, but later the soil became less fertile and the plants were not as healthy. Based on this situation, explain how fertilizers help plants and why excessive use of fertilizers is harmful to the soil.
Answer: Fertilizers are made of chemicals that give nutrients to plants and help them grow well. But if farmers use too much fertilizer, it harms the soil. Excessive use of fertilizers reduces soil fertility, pollutes water, and makes plants unhealthy in the long run.
