( Assertion and Reasoning Questions )
Following questions consist of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason (R).
Answer these questions selecting the appropriate option given below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.
1. Assertion: Interauricular septum separates left ventricle from right atrium.
Reason: Interventricular septum separates left ventricle from right ventricle
2. Assertion: All the arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to various organs.
Reason: Pulmonary vein carries deoxygenated blood to the heart.
3. Assertion: Translocation of sugar occurs through the phloem.
Reason: It is achieved by diffusion of sugars through phloem.
4. Assertion: Resins and gums are stored in old xylem tissue in plants.
Reason: Resins and gums facilitates transport of water molecules.
5. Assertion: Lymph, also known as tissue fluid is colourless.
Reason: It lacks erythrocytes(RBCs)
Answers: 1. (b) 2. (d) 3. (c) 4. (c) 5. (a)

Answers:
1. What pulls up water through the xylem vessels in plants?
Ans: The continuous loss of water through stomata pulls up water through the xylem vessels in a part. The suction force (negative pressure) created by transpiration from the leaves' surface draws water from the soil and roots through the xylem.
2. What happen if platelets were absent in the blood?
Ans: If platelets are not present in the blood, then clotting at the site of injury will not takes place. Blood will continue to flow which could be fatal to an organism.
3. What is special about blood capillaries?
Ans: The capillaries are thin walled and extremally fine tubules which connect arteries to veins.
4. Why are the walls of ventricles thicker than the walls of atria?
Ans: Ventricles have to pump blood into various organs with high pressure, so they have thicker walls than atria.
5. Veins are thin walled and have valves. Justify.
Ans: Veins are thin walled because they handle very less pressure of blood that flows from different organs to the heart and they have valves to ensure blood how is unidirectional.
